STORAGE is probably one of the most important issues to keep in mind when creating good interior design.

The most obvious place where storage has to be central to your thinking is in the kitchen where there’s an amazing range of finishes and styles to choose from.

Having plenty of kitchen cupboards allows us to create a perfectly-ordered space — and a lack of them can sometimes be a deal breaker when it comes to buying the right house.

Bathrooms are also areas where we don’t want clutter so good cabinets and airing cupboards for towels play a vital part in the overall theme.

The bedroom is where we need lots of personal storage solutions too. We all hanker for a walk-in wardrobe but the next best thing is good storage with a combination of shelving, hanging and essential drawer space.

It’s worth checking out Ikea’s range of wardrobes — their design is simple and affordable.

Another good idea is to invest in stand-alone pieces. Traditional wardrobes, chests, dressing tables and bedside tables can often be the starting point in a really unique design of your own for a bedroom or spare room.

Reproduction feature furniture can look especially good but even traditional styling with a contemporary finish such as silver or bronze can look amazing.

The humble ottoman or a bed with lift-up storage will help keep the clutter at bay and keep your room looking sleek.

Even in our living and dining rooms, good storage can help the look of the room.

Coffee tables can be trunks or chests, and stools can also have lift-up lids.

All in all storage is vital to us having a clutter-free home but it’s also integral to making the place look great!
