Highland midwives are just part of the family

-

A MIDWIFE is an essential part of every pregnancy, but for mums- to- be in rural communities they become surrogate family members.

A n ew three-part documentary series, The Highland Midwife, follows the vital medics as they care for pregnant women in some of Scotland’s most remote areas.

The first episode, which airs on Wednesday, follows three expectant mothers in Lochgilphead, Tain and Campbeltown, and the health professionals with them every step of the way.

Becky Brown, a midwife for 10 years, serves the mums of Campbeltown.

She said: “I love it. We are with the women the whole time and we almost become part of the family.”

Morven Fioretti, a midwife serving Tain for more than 20 years, agrees.

“We get to see people for all of their pregnancy and afterwards,” she said. “It’s lovely being part of that sequence.”

The cameras follow Morv en as she helps Anastasia and John Bird with their second pregnancy.

Morven receives a late night call and rushes to the couple’s home to find Anastasia giving birth to Olya in her bedroom.

Proud dad John said: “Morven has made our dreams come true and it’s very special.”

Anastasia added: “I feel like Morvern’s part of the family now.”
