Why Lennon & McCartney never wrote a musical
HE has wr itten charttopping albums, film scores and critically- acclaimed classical music.
In fact, Sir Paul McCartney has shown himself to be a master of any musical form he has tried, but he’s never written a musical.
Now Sir Paul has revealed why – John Lennon didn’t like them.
He also revealed he and Lennon once walked out of South Pacific because his song-writing partner couldn’t stand the show.
The ex-Beatle said Lennon “particularly hated musicals”.
In a Q&A with Australian comedian and musician, Tim Minchin, Sir Paul said he still gets requests now to write a musical.
“But John and I were asked a lot because ‘Lennon-McCartney, Rogers and Hammerstein’, we liked it – it sounded like old writers. Sounded like a team,” he added.
“So we were asked a lot but didn’t like it. John, in particularly, hated musicals.
“We liked West Side Story because that was innovative, it grabbed us and it was really good.
“But one afternoon John and I went to see South Pacific and we walked out because he couldn’t stand it.”
Sir Paul was also asked how he kept his “creative juices running?”
“I don’t think about it, that’s how!” he said.
“If I’ve got time I’ll try and write a song, just because I love it and they – touch wood – flow because I love it.”
