What’s up, doc? Jodie will be a fab Timelord

-

TRUST ME (bbc1, TUES)

New Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker takes on the role of a nurse who steals her doctor friend’s identity to become a doctor herself.

Handily, her mate has decided the world of the NHS is not for her and a life of sheep farming in New Zealand is a better idea.

Before you can say stethoscope, Jodie’s working as a doctor in an A&E department in Edinburgh.

If it’s this easy to get a job as a doctor, why does it take so long get an appointment at my local surgery?

Despite its faults – not least the fact that in some scenes she appeared to be the worst doctor ever – as a viewer you couldn’t help but root for Jodie in this role.

That’s no doubt down to her acting skills.

From period drama in Tess Of The D’Urbervilles to the anguished mum in Broadchurch, Jodie never fails to convince in any role.

In this case, that’s despite a sometimes clunky script and more than a few unbelievable scenes.

The “doctors v nurses” storyline felt cliched, too – does that really go on in the busy, overworked NHS? But will I tune in again? Yes! And I think it’s safe to say the Tardis will be safe in Jodie’s hands and the Daleks should be very afraid.

That’s despite the fuss made when it was announced a woman was getting the role.

WORLD ATHLETIcS cHAMPIONSHIPS (bbc)

The highest of highs and the most agonising lows of the championships have made for some great viewing.

The sight of Norwegian Karsten Warholm’s face when he realised he’d won the 400m hurdles was a joy.

But there hasn’t half been a lot of waffle between the events.

Thank goodness for the remote control and a bit of channel-surfing!
