Corden strikes the right note as king of karaoke
IT’S the best thing you can do in a car since the invention of drive-through food. Carpool Karaoke started off as a fun wee feature on James Corden’s Late Late Show here in the USA.
He drives a celebrity around Los Angeles and they sing some songs. That’s it!
Corden’s show When Corden Met Barlow featured a Carpool Karaoke with my old mucker Gary Barlow.
It has become a massive hit – Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, One Direction, Adele and Ed Sheeran have all taken part.
The idea was snapped up by tech giants Apple – superb news for James.
I went to a special launch party last week with Gary Barlow and his wife, as well as my missus Brianna and our pal Devon.
I asked Gary if he wanted to give it some laldy, but he said he shopped in Waitrose. Typical.
What a great time we had – although I was a bit disappointed they didn’t have the classic I Belong To Glasgow on the karaoke machine.
Or maybe the organisers heard my singing voice and didn’t want to empty the place! James Corden and his superb producer Ben Winston are just two of the partners in a company called Fulwell 73, which produces his shows.
James is doing brilliantly out here with the success of his talk show, as well as spinoff projects
I spoke to James and he told me: “What Fulwell 73 have done in is something unprecedented in American television.
“To have not one but two spin-offs in America on top of five Emmy nominations is a Cinderella story.”
And the fairytale story continues as James’ wife Julia is pregnant with their third child.
While I was at the party with Gary and James, I bumped into an old friend – Natasha Bedingfield.
She’s just moved in to a house that’s almost next door to Brianna and me.
We had a great chat about what she’s up to these days now she’s living in Los Angeles.
Of course her song Unwritten is the theme song for the popular reality soap The Hills.
I told Natasha if she needs a lift anywhere then we could always carpool. The singing is optional for me, but required for her!
Hopefully she’ll nip round for a visit – karaoke nights at the Kings could use someone like Natasha!
