Tartan Army salute strike as one of Scotland’s best ever
SCOTLAND legend Kenny Dalglish has hailed Andrew Robertson’s wonder strike against Lithuania as one of the national team’s greatest goals.
King Kenny – Scotland’s most-capped player – joked the young Liverpool fullback must have been “watching old video of my goals to get some tips”, following his startling effort on Friday evening.
The strike was part of a memorable 3-0 victory that breathed new life into the Scots’ World Cup qualifying campaign.
Social media has been awash with people lauding Robertson’ s 30- yard scorcher, with many fans claiming the strike was one of the very best in a dark blue shirt.
TV presenter Lorraine Kelly described it as “a beautiful thing”.
Celtic and Scotland star Leigh Griffiths last night raved about the goal, revealing: “I was screaming at him to give me the ball but he if he keeps doing that he can keep it!”
Writing in his exclusive Sunday Post column, Dalglish, 66, said: “Robertson played his part superbly well in Vilnius.
“With hardly any backlift, he placed a beautiful, leftfoot curling shot into the keeper’s top right- hand corner of the net.
“I think maybe Andrew has been watching an old video of my goals to get some tips!
“But, seriously, what a finish it was. No wonder everyone stood up to applaud.”
Liverpool legend Dalglish also revealed he had taken time out to help Robertson, who joined the Premier League giants in July after a fairytale rise from amateur football, settle on Merseyside.
He continued: “I had the pleasure of meeting him after his debut game and he is a nice lad. I can’ t influence Jurgen Klopp’s team selection, but I can make Andrew feel at home.”
A Scottish Football Association poll of 2400 fans saw Robertson’s effort – which put Gordon Strachan’s side 2- 0 up – rated by 70% of respondents as the best goal of the game.
And the strike has reignited a national debate about the best ever goal scored in a Scotland jersey. Top of the pile for most remains Archie Gemmill’s 1978 strike against Holland.
Memorable finishes by Dalglish, Scotland’s jointtop scorer with Denis Law, also feature heavily in fans’ lists of top goals.
Legendary football commentator Archie Macpherson last night hailed the former Queen’s Park star’s strike. He said: “Robertson’s goal was cool, he did what he needed to do and it was well executed.
“The confidence was there to see but that is what will come when you have a guy who is playing top class football.”
But Macpherson, 79, thinks it is “over the top” to describe Robertson’s goal – the culmination of a superb team effort – as Scotland’s greatest of all time. He believes it is “almost impossible” to pick the best, given the choice.
Macpherson also revealed he was writing a book chronicling Scotland’s World Cup campaigns between 1974 and 1998, joking he “would love to add another chapter” about next year’s tournament in Russia if the national team can qualify.
