league 2 round-up

HALLAM HOPE scored his first league goal in his second spell at Carlisle as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Mansfield.

The former Everton youngster netted his first of the season in the midweek Checkatrade Trophy win at Morecambe and set the Cumbrians on their way after just 15 minutes, latching on to Luke Joyce’s through ball to calmly slot past Conrad Logan.

After making brilliant saves from Jacob Mellis and Kane Hemmings, goalkeeper Jack Bonham then came to Carlisle’s rescue again just six minutes into the second half, beating away Hemmings’ penalty after Tom Miller had fouled Paul Anderson in the area.

But the home stopper was eventually defeated just five minutes later when Calum Butcher seized on his punched clearance to lob the ball back over his head and secure a point for the Stags.

Ten-man Morecambe lost 2-1 at home to Accrington in a competitive local derby, with Kevin Ellison’s injury-time goal proving a consolatory effort.

Earlier, Billy Kee had given Stanley a 31st-minute lead with a speculative 30-yard effort, before home striker Vadaine Oliver was shown a controversial straight red card by referee Peter Bankes for a foul on the goalscorer.

Accrington then sealed victory at the death, with Jordan Clark tapping home Kayden Jackson’s cross, before Ellison got on the scoresheet in the 95th minute.

Elsewhere, Mitch Rose scored the only goal of the game to give Grimsby a 1-0 victory over Crewe, while over 9,000 crammed into Sincil Bank to see two of the pre-season favourites, Lincoln and Luton, battle out an entertaining 0-0 draw.
