Someone has to get a grip of these costs
Another week, another transport scheme running massively over budget.
This time it’s the electrification of the rail line between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
So far, the much-vaunted project is running late and already £100 million over budget. Only the £100 million, mind.
Most people will understand that schemes such as these can be complex and fraught with difficulties.
But it’s not the first time that we have seen public contracts run up extortionate costs. Remember Edinburgh’s trams fiasco? The inquiry into that shambles revealed how no one appeared to have a grip on the project.
We hope, in this case, that someone, somewhere, is taking a grip given that it is taxpayers’ money at stake.
