£10,000 for all 25-year-olds? It’s time to think about it
A payment of £10,000 should be given to all young people when they turn 25.
Pensioners who are over the state pension age but still working should pay National Insurance, too.
Those are just two recommendations from The Resolution Foundation. It believes these measures will make life fairer for millennials, who find it hard to get on the housing ladder.
In some ways young people seem to have it easier than we did. Gap years, holidays abroad, designer clothes, endless gadgets and happy hours seem to be the norm, while older generations scrimped and saved and worked hard to pay a mortgage. But they do find it hard to get on the housing ladder nowadays so perhaps we should be more sympathetic. The world has changed, after all.
They’ve introduced similar measures in Japan. Instead of dismissing it, we should look at the bigger picture.
