Record breaker

The Sunday Post (Newcastle) - - NEWS -

A wave as high as Buckingham Palace has broken the record for being the largest ever recorded in the southern hemisphere.

The 24-metre high wave formed earlier this week off the coast of New Zealand, and was registered by one of the world’s most remote buoys.

Scientists said it had been caused by a large low-pressure storm and there was likely to have been even larger waves nearby that went unrecorded.

The previous record was in Australia, reaching 22.1m.
