Aworld-renowned auction house was “Banksy-ed” after a painting by the mysterious street artist immediately selfdestructed after selling for more than £1 million.

Girl With Balloon, one of Banksy’s most widely recognised works, went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on Friday night.

The framed stencil spray painting shows a girl reaching towards a heart-shaped balloon.

The sale price equalled Banksy’s previous auction record of £1.04m.

However as soon as it was sold, the 2006 canvas suddenly passed through a shredder installed in the frame and activated by remote control and was cut to ribbons.

Posting a picture of the moment on Instagram, Banksy wrote: “Going, going, gone...”

The artwork was shown dangling in pieces from the bottom of the frame.

It is not known who the successful bidder was but Sotheby’s said they are talking to them and that they were “surprised” by the stunt.

A shocked member of Sotheby’s staff looks on as the Banksy painting goes through the shredder
