Step­toe TV writer dies

Step­toe and Son co-creator Ray Gal­ton has died aged 88.

The scriptwriter who was be­hind pop­u­lar sit­coms in­clud­ing Han­cocks Half Hour, passed away on Fri­day night af­ter a “long and heart­break­ing bat­tle with de­men­tia”.

Man­ager Tessa Le Bars, who worked with the writer for 50 years, said Mr Gal­ton and his co-writer Alan Simp­son were the “fa­thers of Bri­tish sit­com”.

She added: “They will en­dure, in­spire and bring laugh­ter to the na­tion for ever more.”
