WIGAN AIM TO SEE WANE OFF IN STYLE

- By Ian Laybourn SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Wigan forward Liam Farrell will be driven by the desire to provide his mentor with a fitting send-off when he runs out at Old Trafford next Saturday. Head coach Shaun Wane will end his 30-year association with his hometown club after the final whistle in the Grand Final against Warrington and begin a new role with the Scottish Rugby Union. It promises to be an emotional time, too, for three of Farrell’s team-mates, Ryan Sutton, Sam Tomkins and John Bateman, who will all be aiming to make their final appearances as winners before heading off for new challenges. “It would be the best, especially for Waney for the things he’s done for the club,” said Farrell, the 28-year-old former England second rower. “He’s been here a long time as a player and coach and he’s looked after me for a long time, since I was a 15-year-old, and I’m really looking forward to trying to send him out on a high.” Farrell played a key role in a magnificent defensive effort as Wigan defeated Castleford 14-0 in the second semi-final at the DW Stadium on Friday night to secure a place in their 10th Grand Final. “That was a big one for us,” said Farrell, who made a speedy recovery from a shoulder injury to bolster his team’s bid for the title. “We didn’t expect anything like that. Cas are a top-four team and to nil any top-four team is pretty outstanding. “Defensively we were really good, especially with our edges. We looked really composed and that will give us confidence going into next week.” “That puts pressure on everybody to perform well.”
