Penthouse is a loch ‘n’ roll star

Stylish flat in former hotel boasts Fyne views and luxury living

- By Murray Scougall

With

far-reaching views across Loch Fyne, the newly-developed penthouse in the former Columba Hotel in Tarbert boasts one of the best panoramas in the country.

On a clear day, the sights seem to stretch for miles, with the yachts sailing in and out of the harbour and the sparkling water merging with the blue sky.

The penthouse in the C-listed four-storey building, which dates back to the late 19th Century, has been designed to take advantage of its location just a short distance from the coastline.

Local businessman Malcolm MacDonald is behind the transformation of a building that had been derelict for a decade.

“The views are great,” he said.

“You can sit and watch the yachts come and go from the harbour all day.”

The penthouse is on the market for offers over £260,000 and Andrew Fuller of Bell Ingram said: “The large windows fashion a fresh and cosy atmosphere by bathing all of the rooms in natural light, and the views across Tarbert Bay are stunning.”

Malcolm can remember when the hotel was a bustling hot spot in the Argyll and Bute town and was sad to see what had become of it.

“A lot of people used to go to the hotel for weekend breaks, but it’s been derelict for 10 years,” he explained.

“There are many derelict buildings in west coastal towns and a lot of people don’t take on these projects, but my brother and I are local and we are passionate about these buildings.

“Even though there isn’t a lot of money to be gained, we want to preserve them.”

The penthouse is one of seven flats in the building, which was transformed in a three-year project.

“We stripped it back to the bare walls and added an

extension to the back and put in a lift system,” Malcolm continued.

Mixing luxury with functionality, the penthouse includes an open-plan lounge and dining room accented with a striking brick wall.

Adjacent to the living room and within the walls of the sophisticated mansard-style roof architecture sits the stylish kitchen.

The master bedroom’s en-suite bathroom has a large freestanding bath and walk-in shower, while there is also a second double bedroom and family bathroom.

It also has a private landing, a functional utility room and a store room, while there are two dedicated parking spaces with charging points for electric vehicles and an elevated decking area to the rear to sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Andrew added: “The attractive interiors, coupled with the picturesque, tranquil surroundings, makes for a really desirable home.”

Appointments to view the property can be arranged with Andrew at Bell Ingram’s Oban office on 01631 566122.
