A meme is a an idea, activity, concept, catchphrase, or piece of media that spreads, often just for a laugh, from person to person via the internet. The word “meme” was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene. Dawkins is an ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author.
