10 big reasons to get crafty
The Creative Craft Show and Crafts for Christmas is back at Glasgow’s SEC from October 25-28, bringing together more than 200 exhibitors showcasing artisan, handcrafted gifts, supplies and festive inspiration for crafters. Here, the organisers give 10 reasons why making things is good for you.
Feel a sense of achievement Challenging yourself to learn a new skill and make something unique – a knitted scarf, a picture for your wall, an embroidered cushion – will give you a wonderful sense of achievement.
Make someone’s day
Everyone loves to receive a handmade gift. They are unique, more personal and less expensive than High Street alternatives.
Save money
You can start a new crafting hobby for just a few pounds. A pair of knitting needles and a ball of wool, a sketch pad and some chalks or a Decoupage starter kit won’t break the bank.
Just switch off
Many people spend hours each day studying, driving or staring at a screen, whether that’s a phone, computer or TV. Doing something completely different, like knitting, sewing or embroidery, taps into a different set of skills and is a great way to relax. Forget your stresses
Making things can help take your mind off worries. It has been shown that crafting helps reduce and relieve the symptoms caused by depression, stress and anxiety and can provide similar benefits to meditation.
Follow great advice
There are endless online videos showing a step-by-step approach to making almost anything and lots of local groups and nightclasses where you can pick up new skills. And, of course, lots of expert advice at the Creative Craft Show.
Get creative on the move
Stuck in an airport? Waiting to see the doctor? Whip out your knitting or embroidery for an immediate de-stresser.
Spend quality time with children Children love making things, especially if mum, dad or gran is helping. Give yourself a treat and spent some quality time making things with the young ones in your life. You’ll love it.
Make new friends
Crafters are very supportive of each other and many meet up regularly at local groups – you’ll find information online.
Make a date
Get along to the Creative Craft Show at the SEC this week, where you can mingle with other crafters, meet experts, learn new skills at the workshops and try your hand at making something unique at the Make and Take sessions.
