A refurb around 18 months ago has improved the layout, but the impressive pizza oven remains a familiar, and pleasing, sight.

Impeccable. The restaurant managers are courteous and helpful, and the waiting staff are pleasant and prompt.

A great range of pizzas, pastas, risottos, and meat and fish dishes that mix old favourites such as bolognese and arrabiata with more imaginativ­e dishes like merluzzo, which is cod wrapped in parma ham with pea and asparagus risotto. There are also reasonably-priced lunch and pre-theatre menus with a good selection.

5 TAsTe

Nowhere does a focaccia pomodoro like The Italian Kitchen, with beautiful tomatoes and a chewy, light base. The tagliatell­e vegetale was packed with beautiful roast peppers, leek, spinach and a spicy tomato sauce. It’s a dish I’d come back for again and again.

6 prICe

Pretty reasonable city centre prices. A shared starter, two mains, a drink each and a coffee came in a few pence under £40.

7 AmbIeNCe

The split level ensures a few quiet spots if that’s what you prefer, while also maintainin­g a bustling and warm atmosphere.

The Italian Kitchen’s pizzas are legendary among those who have tried them and despite serious competitio­n from the many specialist pizza restaurant­s around the city centre, they remain arguably the best in Glasgow.
