Acclaim for child cancer specialist

-

An Edinburgh child cancer expert who founded a charity which has treated 22,000 youngsters has been recognised in an award.

Professor Tim Eden’s work with World Child Cancer has earned him a Points of Light award from Prime Minister Theresa May.

The charity treats children with cancer in some of the world’s poorest countries, where they would otherwise go without diagnosis, treatment or pain relief.

It works by twinning paediatric oncologists in the UK and other countries with those in the developing world.

Children there have just a 10% chance of survival compared with 80% in the UK.

Professor Eden said: “This is a big surprise but a very welcome one not just to me but for all my wonderful colleagues with whom I work as a volunteer at World Child Cancer.

“They include the hospital teams in both high-income countries and those in developing countries who have been recruited to create twinning partnership.

“We work to improve the diagnosis, care and survival of children worldwide.”

In a personal letter to Tim, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “By lending your extensive medical expertise to the charity, you are providing essential support to thousands of children with cancer every year.”
