Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Williams struck 88 to help frustrate Bangladesh’s spinners on yesterday’s opening day of the First Test in Sylhet.

Williams struck nine fours during his 173-ball innings as the tourists moved to 236 for five from 91 overs at stumps.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Zimbabwe had been left on an uncertain 129 for four before the intervention of Williams and unbeaten pair Peter Moor and Regis Chakabva.

Opener Brian Chari was bowled by Taijul Islam for just 13, while Brendan Taylor was dismissed for six after being caught by Nazmul Hossain Shanto at short leg following another Taijul Islam delivery.

Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza, who opened the batting with Chari, made 52 before being trapped lbw by Abu Jayed and the tourists were left in a precarious position when Sikandar Raza was bowled for 19 by Nazmul Islam.

Left-hander Williams steadied the ship but fell on the brink of the final drinks break after a thick edge from a Mahmudullah delivery was caught by the diving Mehidy Hasan Miraz, leaving Moor (37) and Chakabva (20) to bat out the final hour of play.

Former three-weight world champion Ricky Burns will take on fellow Scot Scott Cardle in a 10-round non-title fight on Saturday.

Burns, 35, had been lined up to face Raymundo Beltran in Las Vegas in a world title eliminator later this month but that bout fell through.

He will now take on former British champion Cardle, 29, in a lightweight contest on the undercard of the Tony BellewOleksandr Usyk cruiserweight title at the Manchester Arena.

The Governor was designed many years ago by Ray Bergman for use on American trout streams. But this dressing is a clever variation from well-known Ayrshire tyer, John Ferguson.

The hook is a size 8-10 wide gape and the tying thread is black Sheer 14/0. There is a double tag – the first is gold tinsel, followed by one of claret or red floss. The body is bronze or natural peacock herl, the hackle gingery brown hen and the wing is hen pheasant.

▪ The temperature is now really dropping at the Woodburn Trout Fishery, near Milton of Campsie. But the fish, some of them really big specimens, are still well up on the surface, especially in the shallow water in the east end of the fishery where they are gorging on fry.

The catch of the week went to Mr Cunningham from Ayrshire with 20 on C&R including a whopper at 15lb, J. Andrew (Bridge of Weir) took three for 12lb, Mr Curry (Irvine) had 10 on C&R – largest 7lb – and Mr Morrison from Glasgow took seven on C&R – largest 8lb.
