We are in the midst of a bumper sales weekend. Do you love a good bargain hunt, or is it all a bit of a sham?

I refuse to be conned by the hype around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. My best bargain was my marriage licence – seven and sixpence for the best wife in the world.

James Strachan, Aberdeenshire

I know someone who found the trainers she wanted online. She delayed buying them by one day and found the Black Friday offer had the trainers £45 dearer. Not much of a bargain.

Lorna Smith, North Yorkshire

While living overseas I bought a couple of lightweight suitcases for $5 each, rummaged through the pockets, and found $200!

Davie Kerr, Lochaber

I bargain hunt all year round. Charity shops, car boot sales. I paid £1 for an unused slow cooker from a coffee morning sale, which I use all the time.

Susan Ireland, Kendal

I bought a beautiful jacket in a charity shop for £6. It was new, as it had a £2 coin in the pocket. Obviously an unwanted gift.

Liz Kelly, Glasgow

I once got my son a lovely duffle coat for £2, after queueing for three hours to get in first. This was 25 years ago.

Julie Doughty, York

Black Friday is just an excuse for greedy retailers to offload rubbish.

Ronald James, Angus

To see people fighting over items that are probably more expensive in the long run is degrading.

Elizabeth O’Regan, Lincoln

The whole sales weekend thing is a con, invented to boost trade.

David G Collins, Yorkshire

There are better deals throughout the year.

Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire
