Bodies found of couple lost during storm

-

A massive search for an elderly couple swept out to sea ended in tragedy yesterday when two bodies were found on the shoreline.

James and Susan Kenneavy had been missing since Wednesday when they are thought to have been attempting to drive home in atrocious weather conditions as 30ft waves flooded the road.

Yesterday the bodies of a man and a woman were found across the bay from where the couple’s wrecked Ford Kuga was discovered on Thursday morning.

Police said the bodies are believed to be Mr and Mrs Kenneavy, of Drummore, Wigtownshire, and their families have been informed.

Friend Edward Beck said the community would rally round the Kenneavy’s family and friends during “the dark days ahead”.

He also called for action to be taken to prevent a similar tragedy in future, as the stretch of road where their car was washed away was known to be treacherous in stormy weather.

Mr Beck said: “Sadly, but not unexpectedly, the worst outcome was confirmed.

“Our task now is to ensure a similar tragedy can never happen again.”

Mr Beck said drivers often ignored the warning signs when the road closed due to bad weather.

Mrs Kenneavy, 65, was found at the water’s edge at Port William near Newton Stewart at 8.15am. Father-of-two Mr Kenneavy, 79, was then found nearby.
