Labour MP quits after threatening journalist

The Sunday Post (Newcastle) - - NEWS -

A Labour frontbencher has quit the shadow cabinet after allegedly threatening a journalist.

Shadow International Development Secretary, Kate Osamor, has resigned just weeks after she was reported to Parliament’s standards watchdog over concerns about her employment of her son.

In a statement, Ms Osamor said she was stepping down to concentrate on supporting her family at “this difficult time”.

Her decision comes after her son, Ishmael, who she employs in her parliamentary office, pleaded guilty to four charges of possession with intent to supply after he was found with £2,500 worth of drugs at the Bestival music festival last year.

It also follows a report that the Edmonton MP verbally abused a journalist from The Times who sought to question her about the case involving her son.

She is reported to have screamed at the reporter that she “should have smashed your face in” with a baseball bat. After throwing a bucket of water at him, she called the police.

Party leader Jeremy Corbyn thanked her for her work and said she “brought a new dimension to the role”.

He said: “I know Kate will take this time to support her family...and support our efforts to rebuild Britain from the backbenches.”
