Soaring costs behind sale of reused stamps
The rising cost of postage has fuelled a market in reused stamps, allowing shoppers to buy them for a quarter of the price.
A first class stamp now costs 67p. However, uncancelled stamps, which have been through the postage system but haven’t been marked as used, are being sold on online auction sites for just 16p.
There is now a booming secondhand market with eBay alone hosting more than 2,100 listings for re-used first and second class stamps.
One seller claimed to sell 20,000 reused stamps a month.
The used stamps are thought to be acquired by exploiting charities which sell on the envelopes they have received in large quantities in order to supplement their incomes.
