Andone breaks his duck with a crucial winner

-

Florin Andone’s first goal in English football earned Brighton a 2-1 win at Huddersfield and their first in four League matches.

Romania striker Andone, signed from Deportivo La Coruna in the summer and making his first Premier League start, headed home a second-half winner.

Huddersfield, who played for the last hour with ten men following the controversial dismissal of striker Steve Mounie, had stormed into a first-minute lead through Mathias Jorgensen.

Brighton equalised in first-half stoppage time through Shane Duffy’s towering header and made their numerical advantage tell in the second period.

“I’m proud with my players’ effort and attitude, but the game was settled by big decisions,” said Huddersfield manager David Wagner.

Crystal Palace ended their eight-match winless streak with a dominant 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park as Burnley’s torrid campaign took another turn for the worse.

James McArthur scored Palace’s first goal from open play at home this season, before Andros Townsend secured the win with a fine goal 12 minutes from time.

Sean Dyche’s side, now with just a single point from their last six outings, may have finished seventh last season, but the Clarets are a team devoid of confidence and, on the evidence of their display here, relegation would appear a distinct possibility.

The result ended the Eagles’ eight-match winless run, and provides them with a bit of breathing space from the bottom three.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson said: “This was an important game that we needed to win, even if it was by hook or by crook.

“But, as it turned out, we didn’t get the three points that way, but because we were clearly the better side.”

Leicester boss Claude Puel compared James Maddison to Glenn Hoddle after the midfielder’s superb strike put him on the road to redemption.

England Under-21 star Maddison scored a brilliant volley in a 2-0 win over Watford to cap a turnaround following last week’s red card against Brighton.

Jamie Vardy’s early penalty put the hosts in charge and Watford never recovered, with Etienne Capoue sent off a minute from time after a twofooted tackle on Kelechi Iheanacho.

Puel – who played with Hoddle at Monaco – believes he has seen flashes of the former England manager, who is recovering from a heart attack, in Maddison.

He said: “Yes (I have seen a goal like that) with Glenn Hoddle. There’s a comparison there because Maddison can invent some different moves.

“He was very upset with himself last week. He is improving and he is an intelligent player.”
