Does Sol have the patience to be a lower-league manager?

-

Sol Campbell isn’t short of confidence.

But managers need more than self-belief to succeed.

That’s why I’m intrigued by his appointment as Macclesfield Town manager.

I wish Sol well and hope he makes a success of it.

But it’s not going to be easy for him.

He’s a guy who was an absolutely terrific footballer.

He played at the very top level of the game for Spurs, Arsenal and England.

But it’s a big leap from playing at the best stadiums in world football to slogging it out in the dugouts of League Two.

Macclesfield are at the very bottom of the Football League. It doesn’t get any lower than that.

Down there, Sol will be dealing with players who are limited in their ability compared to him and his former team-mates.

Handling that can be a challenge for prospective managers who have been top players.

The kind of things that Sol could do on the park without thinking are out of reach for the vast majority of players at League Two level.

So he’ll need to show patience and understanding when he’s instructing his new charges – and I’m not sure those are his strong points.

But, quite honestly, I’ll be delighted if he proves me wrong.
