ESTAURANT REVIEW

- SIX BY NICO, HANOVER ST, EDINBURGH

1 LOCATION

Nestled on Hanover Street, only a few minutes’ walk from busy Princes Street and Waverley Station, easy to find and well positioned.

2 FIrsT ImpressIONs

With contemporary décor, dim lighting and smart furnishings, the eatery feels upmarket while still maintaining a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Despite being Sunday evening, almost every table was taken.

3 servICe

The first-rate staff are knowledgeable, friendly and attentive.

The concept restaurant only serves a six-course, themed, set menu, which changes every six weeks, and there is no a la carte option. However, there is a good mix of different dishes, and vegetarian and vegan versions are both available. As well as the six courses, there are snacks that can be added to your meal.

5 TAsTe

We tried both the regular and vegetarian menus. Each dish was beautifully presented, and we loved the interesting flavour combinations. Savoury highlights included perfectly crisp arancini balls, pappardelle with ox cheek ragu, and slow-cooked aubergine with ricotta. For dessert, we loved the lemon tart. The portions are small but we were pleasantly full by the end.

6 prICe

The six-course tasting menu costs £28, and you can add wine pairing for each dish for an extra £25. The wine and cocktail menu has both affordable and more expensive options.

7 AmbIeNCe

Warm and comfortable, but tables are close together so it can feel a little cramped.

8 sOmeThINg speCIAL

The cocktail menu has both classics and more unusual options. Definitely worth a try!

9 TOILeTs

Clean, well decorated and located on the ground floor.

10 verdICT

The innovative menu, tasty dishes and friendly staff makes this restaurant a must-visit for special occasions. Plus, the set menu felt good value for money.
