1 Location

In the heart of the city centre, this gorgeous building is easily accessible and perfect for dinner and drinks with the lovely 158 cocktail bar on the ground floor and the restaurant one up.

2 First impressions

The building interior is simply stunning, from the high ceilings and stained glass windows, to the architectural detail. It is steeped in history, being a former hospital. It’s early on a Saturday night but the place is bustling when we arrive.

3 service

Our lovely waiter brought a tray bearing all the cuts of meat and explained them, which was a nice touch. All the staff were friendly and attentive.

4 menu

Hutchesons is a steak and seafood fan’s paradise. There’s lots of choice, from rarebit and roasted monkfish to ribeye and rump. There’s also a range of reserve cuts, including tomahawk and porterhouse and plenty of side and sauce options.

5 taste

We chose bread and olives to start – and it was amazing. A whole freshly-baked loaf with a knife to slice it yourself and some of the biggest olives I’ve ever seen, which were just divine. Sensational – and then there was the steak…fillet for myself and T-bone across the table, served with handcut chips and pepper brandy sauce. Absolutely delicious. We had garlic mushrooms and a rocket parmesan salad on the side, which were lovely.

6 price

At more than £30 a plate for a steak, a meal is a on the pricey side – but perfect for a celebration.

7 ambience

Nice and relaxed. We didn’t feel rushed at all. Despite being a huge room, the dining area is warm and elegant. The choice of easy-listening background music was quite simply superb.

8 something speciaL

Dessert…every one looked fab. And the after dinner cocktails, especially the whisky sour, are a superb way to finish off an excellent meal.

You do have to drag yourself downstairs but it’s worth it for the squeaky clean facilities. There is a lift if you’ve eaten just a little too much

A cut above the rest! 19/20
