Blowing The Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life Michael Caine, Hodder & Stoughton, £20

This biography has been described as national treasure Caine at his most “wise and entertaining best”.

Age – he is 85 – has clearly not dulled his wit. The Hollywood giant, who came from humble beginnings to star in classic movies such as The Italian Job is a natural story teller.

OUR VERDICT 9/10 The Story of Brexit Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris, Michael Joseph, £7.99

This is the latest offering in the hilarious Ladybird For Grown Ups series.

A mickey-take of the Brexit debate, it is largely funny (and, boy, do we need some fun as Britain hurtles towards its divorce with Europe).

But despite containing one particular belter of a joke, it’s not as side-splitting as some of its predecessors.

OUR VERDICT 7/10.
