Curl up and dye? More women say no thanks
An increasing number of women are choosing not to dye their grey hair, according to web search figures.
The picture-led website Pinterest has revealed that searches for “going grey” have risen more than 879%. The website predicts that in 2019 consumers will “stop fighting the natural ageing process in favour of letting their silver strands shine through.”
This positive attitude towards women going grey has been driven by celebrities, like actress Helen Mirren, refusing to curl up and dye.
Dr Caroline Mair, a fashion psychologist, says women have historically been subjected to a double whammy of sexism and ageism when they show any sign of ageing and they have tended to cover any grey hair with dye.
She argues that a man with grey hair is described as a “silver fox” but a woman with grey hair is rarely seen in a positive way.
The growing popularity of women going grey, she added, “is an extension of the anti-anti-ageing movement taking hold”.
“This outward display of self-acceptance and self-confidence brings a sense of empowerment and authenticity.
“It says: ‘This is me. I like who I am.”
