Dodging the party might be only way to enjoy the festive fun without the festive fuzz
It’s the season of overindulgence, so I understood why Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid decided to duck out of her work Christmas party to avoid temptation.
She apparently hasn’t drunk alcohol in more than 100 days, and says she feels “clearer, sharper and more energetic than ever”.
Avoiding the party, and not allowing yourself even one glass of wine, seems quite extreme but it also sounds like she didn’t trust herself to be in the thick of it. It takes a lot of discipline to do what she’s done and we have to remember she has an early-morning job and can’t afford to be fuzzy-headed on live TV. In her line of work, if you’re not absolutely on it, there’s always someone ready to have a go and another to take your place.
Susanna knows herself better than anyone else, and she knows what she has to do to keep herself in good shape, both mentally and physically. I think it sends a good message when she say she feels much sharper and brighter. She has also lost two stone and looks great.
As we get older, we recover less quickly from everything, so having a blow-out comes at a heavier price.
Christmas is a time of year when everyone is off, so it’s the perfect excuse to let your hair down and eat and drink whatever you like. But with a recent survey showing we consume 21,000 extra calories in December on average, we probably underestimate how much fat and sugar are in the festive trimmings, not to mention the booze. And because we live in a country that’s cold and dark at this time of year, we’re less likely to be active.
There’s also the whole drink-driving thing where, if you’re going out with friends and want to take your car you can’t afford to have any alcohol. So, seeing as I don’t want to be jumping in a taxi in a city centre as a single female late at night, I usually take the car and don’t drink. That way I enjoy the festive fun without the festive fuzz.
