Dear June

This will be my first Christmas without my beautiful mum after she passed away very unexpectedly.

I find myself avoiding shopping or going to supermarkets filled with festive goods. I can’t switch the TV or radio on as everything seems to be about Christmas. It is not the same and never will be without my mum.

I always looked forward to Christmas but I’m filled with sadness as I miss her so much. Is she with our family and my nana and papa? Will she be with me at Christmas?

June Says

The loss of a parent who was always there to support and spur you on is life-changing.

You were lucky to have been surrounded by the love of your mum as she strived to give you the confidence and encouragement at every stage of your development, to enable you to build a life of your own.

Our parents don’t live forever and when our parents are still around it is hard to imagine life without them, as they would always have been close by or on the end of the phone.

After the loss of a mum, time is needed to adapt to life without the safety net a parent offers.

For a long time after I lost my mum, I continued to reach for the phone to tell her of any exciting news and I so yearned for her words of encouragement when my hopes were dashed.

Christmas is a particularly painful time for those who have lost a loved one.

For me, I always knew my mum would be on my side, fighting my corner, and after I received comforting words from her I would pick myself up and start again.

Mums don’t disappear in the spirit world after their physical death. They remain close to their kids until the family is reunited once more.

I am aware of two people drawing forward and, as they come close, I can see the man is much taller than the petite lady. He’s wearing a kilt and is in Scottish attire.

I feel the lady is your wee mum and irrespective of her size I am impressed to say she would have been a force to be reckoned with if anyone hurt her family! She was very protective of her children (are there three?).

That hasn’t changed and she’ll remain close to watch over each one. Her love for you all is stronger than ever.

VERDICT

My wee mum was only 4ft 10in and you were right about her feisty nature, as she was someone to be reckoned with if anyone harmed her family.

I have two brothers, so there are three of us.

They live down south but I always stayed close by my mum.

My papa was in The Black Watch and he played the pipes.

I still have an old recording of him playing with the pipe band.

I also have a picture of him in his Scottish attire.

Mum was a dad’s girl and I am happy to learn she is with my papa.
