A delighted Alloa boss Jim Goodwin said: “This was great result for us, a result that our play deserved.

“We dominated large parts of the game and, although Queen of the South were dangerous on the break, I was really pleased with the defence and we scored two great goals.”

The home side took control of the match early on and were soon pounding the visitors defence,

Flannigan’s shot from close range was deflected past the post by Alan Martin in the Queens goal.

Flannigan was again involved when he took on two defenders and crossed to Zanatta, who fired a well shot on to the bar.

Hastie, then Trouten, both had shots that were turned away for corners.

The visitors had their first shot on target late in the first half when Josh Todd, standing on the edge of the penalty box fired in a shot that Neil Parry brilliantly turned away for a corner.

Then Callum Semple had an opportunity to open for the visitors, but his header from close range was brilliantly saved by Parry.

Alloa eventually got the goal their play deserved, midway through the second period.

When the home side were awarded a free kick, 20 yards from goal, Iain Flannigan stepped up to fire the ball past Alan Martin in the visitor’s goal.

Alloa continued to press their superiority, and notched a richly-deserved second goal when substitute Liam Burt fired in a shot from the edge of the box. Alan Martin could only parry it out, to the feet of Dario Zanatta, who tapped home.

Queens manager Gary Naysmith reflected: “We gave away a lot of needless fouls and we lost the first goal from a freekick from the edge of the box.

“We fought hard and got nothing for the effort. We were off the mark at both ends of the field.
