Wright: Bid big if you’re looking for Kerr or Clark

- By Sean Hamilton sport@sundaypost.com

His top stars have shone brightly this season.

But St Johnstone gaffer Tommy Wright insists his prize assets’ price tags are even more dazzling than their performances.

Saints face Rangers today in a clash where victory will move them within four points of the Ibrox men.

Their points haul has drawn admiring glances.

But Wright is ready to fend off interest in standout stars like Zander Clark and Jason Kerr unless the price is right.

“That’s part and parcel of it and we’ll deal with it,” said Wright of the potential for a January raid.

“You could put us in the class of being a selling club, but I wouldn’t put us in the class of being desperate to sell.

“Because of how the chairman has run the club, financially we’re sound, so it wouldn’t be a case of having to take the first bid that comes.

“It would take extremely big offers to get the likes of those two.

“There have been one or two enquiries, but you soon suss them out in terms of: ‘Well, make an offer,’ and the offer doesn’t come.

“The chairman knows what he’s doing and if there are bids coming in for our players, he knows their value.

“He certainly knows the value that I put on them!”

Rather than the prospect of shedding top talent, Wright is focused instead on boosting his squad ahead of a continued top six – and potential European – push in 2019.

That includes moves to secure his top talent on longer deals.

“I think we’re in a good, strong position, but we do have to strengthen,” said Wright.

“I had a really good meeting with the chairman the other day and he wants to strengthen too.

“We need to move one or two out at the same time – and that will happen.

“But in the January window I quite like to get players re-signed. I know you can do that at any time, but coming up to January there’s more focus on it.

“You know clubs will be watching our players and that sharpens your thinking.

“We’ll be hoping to extend the likes of Zander and Jason’s contracts as well.”
