Ross tips Bain to bounce back in San Marino

- By Mark Walker SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Scott Bain has been backed to bounce back from his nightmare in Kazakhstan by Celtic and Scotland Under 21s keeper Ross Doohan.

The current Hoops No.1 couldn’t be blamed for any of the three goals conceded on Thursday as Scotland slumped to a truly horrific defeat.

But it was still a night to forget for former Dundee keeper Bain on his first competitive start for his country.

Scotland Under 21s keeper Doohan works with Bain at Parkhead, and he’s been earning rave reviews for his displays this season on loan at Championship shock-troops Ayr United.

He kept a clean sheet for Scot Gemmill’s side in the draw with Mexico in Marbella on Friday, and is preparing to face Sweden tomorrow in Spain too.

Doohan said: “Scott’s a great guy, who takes everything in his stride and doesn’t get fazed by anything. He’ll bounce back from the game in Kazakhstan when we play San Marino.

“He’s a top keeper who has helped me out a lot.

“Craig Gordon, Dorus de Vries and Scott have all worked with me with training and advice. All have been terrific.

“Of course, it wasn’t nice seeing your pal lose three goals like that, but I am positive Scott will recover easily from that.

“He’s a top keeper, and you have seen that when he was been called upon at Celtic.

“He got the call ahead of Craig, and since then he’s done brilliantly.”

Doohan’s Ayr are still in the play-off hunt in the Championship despite a recent blip in form.

The highly-rated 20-year-old – who signed a four-year contract at Parkhead last year – admits he’s enjoyed every minute at Somerset Park.

He said: “It’s my first full season and I’ve played a lot of games. I feel I have matured a lot and I think I have improved every day.

“Hopefully, we can keep going well. We’ve had a wee dip, but we still believe in ourselves.

“We still have nine games left, and we need to keep pushing on.”
