Restaurant REVIEW

TUK TUK, LEVEN STREET, EDINBURGH

-

1 LOCATION

Sitting directly opposite the King’s Theatre, just up from Tollcross, the restaurant is perfectly placed for theatregoers looking for a quick bite before their show.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The entrance leads into a large dining room, which was near empty when we first arrived. However, it is brightly decorated with a rustic-chic style that makes you feel instantly at home.

3 SERVICE

We couldn’t fault the attentive and friendly staff.

4 MENU

Dishes are split into three sections: roadside plates, street curries and tandoor kitchen grilled meats. Served tapas size and style, it’s recommended you order three dishes per person, as well as a few additional sides, such as rice, naan and chapati.

5 TASTE

Our group of four decided to share, so we got a mix and match of dishes from across the menu. From the roadside plates – inspired by the street hawkers of India – we opted for the pakora platter, golgappa chaat puri, and the puri yoghurt bombs. Then we added a few curries, including classic chana masala, butter paneer, tarka dhal and aloo gobhi. Every single dish was a hit. We loved the delicately blended spices, and the portions were more than enough to fill our bellies – and we even had leftovers.

6 SOMETHING SPECIAL

You can choose to bring along your own wine or beer, paying a £1 recycling fee per person. However, if you are staying dry, try a freshly blended lassi. This Indian smoothie drink comes in a range of lovely sweet flavours.

7 PRICE

We paid just over £65 for nine dishes, three naans and two pilau rice. Great value.

8 AMBIENCE

The casual eatery was packed by the time we left, giving it a buzzing and vibrant atmosphere.

9 TOILETS

The only negative to our whole visit. The toilets are located in the basement, and really could do with a good, deep clean.

10 VERDICT

Perfect for a pre-theatre bite. 16/20
