Key findings of Trump-Russia report expected
The main findings from a special investigation into Russian interference in the US Presidential elections are expected to be released today.
Attorney general William Barr spent yesterday reviewing Robert Mueller’s confidential report on the Trump-Russia investigation, and has assured senior congressmen he is “committed to as much transparency as possible” and will advise them of its principal conclusions.
But, while congress had hoped that would happen yesterday, bylastnightitwas clear they would have to wait.
Mr Mueller sent the attorney general the final report on Friday after a 22-month investigation that cast a dark shadow over Donald Trump’s presidency.
The indication that Mr Mueller does not plantomakeany additional indictments was welcome news to some in Mr Trump’s orbit who had feared a final round of charges could ensnare more of his associates, including family.
There was relief in his inner circle that Donald Trump Jr, the president’s son, will not face action for chairing a meeting in June 2016 with a Russian lawyer who promised “dirt” on Hillary Clinton.
Equally, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, a senior adviser who has also come under intense scrutiny over his contacts with Russians, appears to be off the hook.
Mr Trump, who has relentlessly criticised Mr Mueller’s investigation as a “witch hunt”, was on thegolfcoursein Florida yesterday.
