Heard the one about The Irishman? Marty, Judy and the Joker are my Oscar tips
The crust on the steak pie hasn’t even gone soggy yet but the New Year is well and truly upon us. While you might be hitting the gym to work off the brandy butter and sausage rolls you ate over the Christmas period, I’ve been training up for my busiest time of the year – awards season.
The few months of awards actually reminds me of Hogmanay. You’ve got to sit through a lot of songs, there’s loads of food lying around that won’t get eaten, and there’s a decent chance someone’s going to break down in tears!
Limousines are a bit like getting a taxi after The Bells
– if you haven’t booked it early, there’s no chance you’ll get one...
I’ll be bringing you all the awards news in the coming weeks – I’ve been up and down more red carpets than the cleaning lady at Pittodrie!
But I’m looking forward to seeing who’s going to be scooping all the Oscars. It might be early doors but
I’ve got a few inklings as to who might be hitting the headlines.The Golden Globes come first, and that could give a better indication as to who will be winning on February 9.
Renee Zellweger has, incredibly, never won an Academy Award for best actress before – although she was named best supporting actress for Cold Mountain.
I reckon that might change – she’s been shortlisted for playing Judy Garland in the excellent biopic Judy.
She’s up against Scarlett Johansson for Netflix’s drama Marriage Story, but I reckon it might be Renee’s time. Hollywood loves a tale about either the movie industry or its stars!
Going by that logic, Once Upon
A Time In Hollywood might just pick up the best picture award.
The movie was a “fairytale” about the Manson Family and the murder of Sharon Tate, which sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it was a great watch and surprisingly funny.
Director Quentin Tarantino might lose out, though, to an Irishman. No, Liam Neeson isn’t nominated – I mean Martin Scorsese’s crime epic The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro.
Bob has been “de-aged” to look like a younger version of himself. I was so impressed I immediately emailed the producers of Lorraine to ask if I could get the same treatment!
When it comes to who’s going to be best actor, I see Joaquin Phoenix is the favourite, for his sublime performance in Joker.
Joker was pretty violent and featured groups of clowns attacking people. If that ever happens to you, the best defence is to go for the juggler.
Another movie which the Academy might recognise is Avengers: End game. True, it’s not the best film on the list, but the Marvel series, and its spin-offs, have been absolutely massive.
Endgame was the end of an era, so we might see that win something as a thank you.
So, remember my tips if these films all do well next month.
And if they don’t… then never mind!
