Bayer boss Bosz has admiration for Rangers

Bayer Leverkusen boss, Peter Bosz, insists he won’t allow his players to take qualification for granted when they play Rangers.

He’s been hugely impressed with Steven Gerrard’s men in their pre-season matches.

Having built a 3-1 lead from the first leg at Ibrox, the Bundesliga side are now one of the favourites for the Europa League, especially with the remainder of the tournament’s games being played in their North Rhine-Westphalia region.

However, Bosz – a former manager of Borussia Dortmund and Ajax – will make sure complacency doesn’t become an issue with his players ahead of the game.

He said: “My ambitions in the Europa League are very big – but you achieve nothing by talking about it.

“We have to be extremely focused on the next game, which is against Rangers.

“I won’t make the mistake of thinking any further in the tournament, and neither will my players.

“Rangers have had some great results in their pre-season games, and we have watched them.

“And although we won 3-1 in Scotland, we actually didn’t play well at all. So this tie is far from over yet.

“Before the break, we were flying. There can be no doubt at all that the coronavirus came at the worst possible time for us.

“At this club, the goal is always to win a trophy, and we came very close to winning the German Cup (a 4-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Final on July 4, their last competitive game).

“If it doesn’t work out, then OK. But our aim is always to win a competition.”
