Country parks

- peter Irvine’s

We’ve selected four favourites from Scotland’s 40 country parks. Go on, get exploring... Drumlanrig

On A76, 7km north of Thornhill in the west Borders, in whose romance and history it’s steeped, much more than merely a country park. Main outdoor focus is on extensive trails for walking and cycling. While the adventure playground has reopened, the castle, along with the tearoom and gift shop, will remain closed until next year. drumlanrigcastle.co.uk (01848) 33155

Muirshiel

Via Largs (A760) or Glasgow (M8, junction 29 A737 then A760 5km south of Johnstone). North from village on Kilmacolm road for 3km then signed. Muirshiel is name given to wider area but park proper begins 6km on road along the Calder valley. Despite proximity to the conurbation, this is a wild and enchanting place for walks, picnics etc.

John Muir Country Park

Named after the 19th Century conservationist who founded America’s national parks (and the Sierra Club), and who was born in Dunbar. This swathe of coastline to the west of the town (partly known locally as Tyninghame) is an important estuarine nature reserve but is good for family walks. Various entry points: main one is from Dunbar roundabout on A1 back towards North Berwick, then A1087, 1km; by clifftop trail from Dunbar; or from car park on road into Dunbar from west at West Barns. eastlothian.gov.uk (01620) 827459

Hirsel

On A697, north edge town (direction Kelso). 3,000 acres the grounds of Hirsel House (not open to the public). 2-4km walks through farmland and Dunglass Woods, including lovely languid lake. dandaestates.co.uk (01555) 851536 Peter Irvine is the author of the essential travel guide Scotland the Best published by Collins, priced £15.99
