THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

I love reading the Where’s Wally series of books. But they also have an American book, Where’s Waldo. Do other countries have their own versions? – F

They do. Where’s Wally is a series of children’s puzzle books created by English illustrator Martin Handford.

Wally’s name is changed in many countries, such as Holger in Denmark Vallu in Finland and Walter in Germany – but he’s always just as difficult to locate.

With a former US Vice-President challenging the incumbent president, Donald Trump, in November’s US election, I would like to know how many vice-presidents have gone on to hold the top job. – A

Forty-eight men have been vicepresidents of the US.

Fourteen have gone on to hold the office of president, promoted due to assassination, death by other means, resignation or simply by getting elected in their own right.

The most recent vice-president to take his place in the Oval Office was George HW Bush, who was Ronald Reagan’s deputy from 1981-89, before serving as president for a single term, from 1989-93.

What were the names of the pair of little old ladies who resided in Fawlty Towers? – L

They were Miss Abitha Tibbs and Miss Ursula Gatsby, played by Gilly Flower and Renee Roberts. They were a couple of rather dotty old spinsters who lived in the hotel run by John Cleese’s Basil Fawlty.

Another guest who lived at Fawlty Towers was Major Gowen, a slightly senile old Royal Artilleryman, played by Ballard Berkeley.
