‘Struggling’ Israeli defender set for Celtic exit door

Celtic are to let homesick Hatem Elhamed return to his native Israel.

The 29-year-old defender was signed on a four-year deal from Hapoel Be’er Sheva for £1.6 million in 2019.

It is understood that he is anxious to be reunited with his wife and son back in his homeland and will be allowed to return to his old club with his preference for a permanent deal rather than a loan.

“A deal has been agreed with Be’er Sheva. I don’t know if it has been finalised,” said manager Neil Lennon.

“He was going through a really difficult time. His wife and son were back in Israel and he was here on his own and he was really struggling with life away from the training ground and stadium.

“We have to take into consideration the human factor on that.

“I wouldn’t say he was suffering with depression but he was very low, so we have made the right decision for him and the club.

“Their transfer window is open, so there are no issues with that.”

The Irishman saw Odsonne Edouard score the winner in an at times nervy 2-1 win over Motherwell.

It was the Frenchman’s 17th goal of the season and his seventh in the last seven games but his manager is clearly in no mind to let him ease off.

“I think there is more to come from him,” said Lennon.

“He could have had a hat-trick today. His finishing and work rate can be better but he looks in a better place than he was for the first half of the season for sure and he is getting the goals his play deserves.”

Stephen Welsh, who scored his first goal for Celtic, was also not about to be given a chance to luxuriate in his success with the manager choosing instead to wax lyrical about the assist that gave him his opportunity.

“It’s a great header from someone who never lets us down but the delivery from David Turnbull is just superb,” said the Hoops boss.

“It is a facet of our game that has improved with David – Scott Brown’s goal on Tuesday, Elyounoussi’s a few weeks ago at Livingston.

“It was another great delivery today and you know when it leaves his foot that any contact at all and it could be a goal. That is a real asset he has brought to the squad.

“I actually thought he came off it at a wee bit towards the latter end of the second half, but he has been outstanding, a great signing and a great professional.

“He has brought goals, assists and a bit of flair to the team, so really pleased with his contribution.”
