Killie aiming to have new boss in by tomorrow

- By Brian Fowlie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Kilmarnock are in advanced talks with their preferred candidate to take over as manager.

Head of football operations James Fowler confirmed that final negotiations are taking place with the man they want to take over from Alex Dyer.

Former St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright is favourite to step in.

He has been interviewed and is vying with ex-Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson and former Falkirk chief Steven Pressley.

After watching Killie slide closer to the relegation playoff spot after defeat at St Mirren, Fowler said he hoped an appointment will be made in time for their match against Motherwell on Wednesday night.

He added: “Since Alex has left, these things take time to get the interviews carried out and then try and get a deal agreed.

“Interviews have taken place and we are speaking to the candidates to get things finalised.

“We will hopefully have someone in by the time of the Motherwell game.

“Ideally we would like to have someone in by Monday to take training.”

Fowler maintains there is quality in the squad for the next manager to work with.

He said: “Everyone has had a fair crack of the whip this season.

“It is about the new manager finding something different.

“He might have something that works that he has used previously.

“He will hopefully find something in the group to bring us success.

“I think there is still quality in this group.

“I have been there myself as a player where you go on bad runs and it impacts you.

“It is easy for players to go into their shells, but it is important we stick together.

“As a staff, we will remind them they are good players and things will turn for them.”

Understandably, Fowler wasn’t overly critical of the players despite them being easily beaten 2-0 by St Mirren yesterday.

He said: “It was a tough one to take as I don’t think there was too much between the teams.

“St Mirren are coming off the back of some decent performances themselves and results along the way and that maybe gave them the edge.

“We started OK but then we lost a goal and the second one Alan Power has held his hands up for it.

“That probably killed the game as we hadn’t been scoring freely and it made it a challenge.

“We are still going to be missing some of our injured defenders for a few weeks.”
