Golden Years

Sporting memories:

Andy Little will never forget the leadership shown and sacrifices made by Steven Davis and Allan McGregor when Rangers were in financial meltdown.

So the ex-Ibrox striker is thrilled to see the veteran pair rewarded with title glory in their second spells with the club.

Davis, as captain, and McGregor were key dressing-room figures when Rangers fell into administration in February, 2012.

Little recalled: “Those two were the biggest influences on the squad getting through the last four months of that season.

“So it’s very poignant they’re back playing another massive role in finally bringing success back to Rangers.

“I’m delighted for them. They’re two genuine Rangers greats who should be in the Hall Of Fame.

“Nine years ago, Davo always spoke calmly, and was very considered.

“Initially there was talk of a broad cut in wages. But it was him who realised certain players weren’t earning anything like others.

“A cut in our wages meant we couldn’t afford our mortgage.

“As captain, Davo was extremely fair about everyone’s situation, and considerate of younger players including me – and generous.

“I’d imagine he took a 75% wage cut.

“I can remember Allan just being the character he is. Very vocal, taking the lead in fighting our corner.

“I don’t think any of us pretended we knew everything that was going on, and it took decent people, like those two, to maintain the calm amongst us.”

Today’s Old Firm game brings back memories of a career highlight for Little.

It was in the March fixture in 2012 that he scored 18 seconds after coming on as a substitute in a 3-2 victory.

Sone Aluko and Lee Wallace also netted as Rangers, after a 10-point deduction, called on a siege mentality to prevent Celtic from winning the league at Ibrox.

“On that one day, I felt absolutely amazing,’ said Little. “I remember walking round Glasgow that evening feeling on top of the world.

“I knew pretty quickly how special that day would be for the rest of my life.

“Players and fans had been through a really tough time. And pretty quickly for us, it was back to the nonsense.

“We were training, then having meetings with owners, administrators and management.

“We didn’t understand much about a lot of what was going on.

“The only thing we could take care of that weekend was the result against Celtic – and we did.”
