A toddler has died after being hit by a car outside his home in a cul-de-sac.

Two-year-old Alex Radan was struck by the Honda Civic just before 7pm on Friday in Dumfries.

He was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary but could not be saved. The car involved in the accident, which happened in the town’s Charnwood Place was being driven by a 54-year-old man. He is understood to be a neighbour.

Police are appealing for witnesses or for anyone who may have relevant CCTV footage from the area to come forward. Floral tributes were placed at the scene yesterday.

The small new-build development, which is in the centre of the town, was only completed around two years ago and includes a care home.

Dumfries Councillor Ivor Hyslop said: “All sympathies are with the family following this terrible tragedy. The location is a quiet cul-de-sac and not the sort of place you would imagine a dreadful road accident like this could happen. It’s a tragic event and my thoughts go to the family and to all those involved.”

Sgt Bob McNay said: “Our thoughts are with the child’s family at this time, following their tragic loss. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and we are asking for anyone who was in the area and witnessed the events to please come forward.

“We are also keen to speak to anyone who may have CCTV overlooking the Charnwood Place area to get in contact, as they may be able to assist our inquiries.”

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist has died after colliding with a car in Argyll. The Kawasaki hit a black Mitsubishi Outlander on the A85 near Connel around 2.30pm on Friday.

The rider, 62, was taken to Lorn and Islands Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. The road was closed for nine hours while investigations took place.

Insp Archie McGuire said: “Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of those involved in this crash. Roads may be busier than they have been in recent weeks and we would ask that motorists stay vigilant when making essential journeys.”
