Awards keep coming but the real winner this season is the first lady of Hollywood Viola
It’s another Sunday...it’s another awards show... and it’s another audience no-show!
Bafta’s Film Awards are tonight and it’s another ceremony where I can vote. I know I’m more qualified to vote on the Daftas, but so be it!
I won’t bore you with my predictions – I’ve been stung at the bookies too many times for that – although I can guarantee one British winner.
That’s in the Best British Film category…put your money on it now!
I’m surprised Viola Davis, along with Carey Mulligan and Olivia Colman, were missing from the Best Actress list, they all could and perhaps should have appeared. Instead, I fancy Frances McDormand, for her role in Nomadland, could well win.
Alternatively Vanessa Kirby could win for her excellent turn in Pieces Of A Woman.
I reckon it’ll come down to one of those two but again I don’t want to back either too much – it’s been such a weird year that it’s practically impossible to judge who’s the real favourite. Viola Davis won’t be too annoyed at missing out tonight. She is already winning awards and is all set to play Michelle Obama in an upcoming Showtime series.
It’s called The First Lady and I can’t wait to see it.
“She is a goddess, she’d probably cringe if she heard me say that,” said Viola.“I love her beyond love.”
Understated by Viola! How come no one says that about me?
One category that rarely gets a big mention is Best Sound but I really think that team all deserve a mention for the movie Sound of Metal. Not only does the film have a brilliant performance from Riz Ahmed who plays the role of a drummer going deaf but the sound team take us on that journey with him in a most moving way.
They were recording sound for the movie in new and innovative ways, I really loved it and hope the guys pick up an award tonight.
Saucy drama Bridgerton is also scooping more awards. Congrats to the show’s Rege-Jean Page on his NAACP Award, presented by the US-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Accepting it he said:“You can see the emotional connection with the show that people have formed and that’s all you want as an artist.”

Rege-Jean.You’ll be able to see him in the forthcoming blockbuster Dungeons And Dragons movie too.
Apparently the script is full of obscure wizardry and magical terms from the role-playing game. Don’t worry, Rege-Jean, just use a spell-checker!
Talking of magic,Will Smith is still managing to cast a spell over viewers and is one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
His film Bad Boys For Life last year made around £400 million worldwide at the box office. Will there be a fourth movie in the franchise?
It looks like it as Will recently said: “Hopefully one more Bad Boys before we become Sad Boys!”
