Cup win would cap Tannadice stay for Pawlett

Peter Pawlett has confirmed he could quit Dundee United in the summer – but admits savouring Scottish Cup glory would be the ideal way to bow out.

The in-demand winger is a target for Premiership rivals St Johnstone and showed exactly why with a classy second-half winner to end Forfar’s hopes of an upset as Micky Mellon’s men secured their quarter-final slot in Friday night’s 1-0 victory at Station Park.

The 30-year-old will soon be out of contract at Tannadice where he’s become a popular figure among supporters since arriving on Tayside in 2019.

But the former Aberdeen and MK Dons ace admits lifting the famous old trophy would be a fitting way to depart should be decide his future lies elsewhere.

Pawlett said: “I have spoken to St Johnstone and people are aware of that.

“Dundee United have spoken to me. I am in talks with the club and I enjoy it here.

“It is a great club and I enjoy the lads and the dressing room, and we’ll see what happens over the coming weeks.

“Of course, any player wants to play in a Scottish Cup Final and I’m no different.

“I’m just focusing on my football and want to do my talking on the pitch, to put myself in the best situation.

“If I am providing for Dundee United I will get the opportunity to be here or to put myself in the shop window elsewhere. That is the situation where I am at the minute.”

Proud Pawlett was a key member of the triumphant Aberdeen side which lifted the League Cup back in 2014, following a nail-biting penalty shootout win over Inverness at Celtic Park.

And the ex-Dons attacker insists all that matters is for Mellon’s hopefuls to keep progressing in their quest to land silverware at Hampden next month.

He added: “I remember we beat Alloa in our first round and Partick Thistle with a last-minute goal and, like our win at Forfar, it doesn’t matter how you get through, as long as you get through.

“We have an opportunity. We are confident of going through in our squad and everybody’s ability.

“Before then, we have a league game midweek against Kilmarnock and we will focus fully on that.”
