Well boss keen to deal in Cole for the future

- By Brian Fowlie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander believes it’s time for Devante Cole to end his nomadic lifestyle and sign a new contract to stay at Fir Park.

The striker scored one goal and set up another in his side’s victory over Killie.

Alexander would relish the chance to work for longer with the 25-year-old, who has been with nine different clubs.

He said: “We spoke to him a while ago about a contract and that is ongoing.

“We would be delighted to keep him here. I think we can help him improve and get to the next level.

“He needs to add the consistency of being at one club for a reasonable length of time. He has led a little bit of a nomadic existence up to now but he has got the qualities needed for a top-level career.

“I think his goals speak for themselves, but his all-round contribution and linkup play has been excellent.

“Goalscorers get the limelight and he deserves it. There are a lot of other lads going under the radar who are also making big contributions.

“We talk all the time about being a team and all working for results.”

Veteran midfielder Sam Foley was impressive on his first start under Alexander. The 34-year-old has only appeared three times for Motherwell since joining from St Mirren at the start of the year.

Alexander added: “The team has been on a great run of form lately but there has been some great training performances from certain players.

“They have been knocking on the door but just haven’t been able to get into the side on a Saturday.

“I thought this was an opportunity to reward them. This was Sam’s first game for a long, long time but he keeps himself in really top form.

“Jake Hastie has been putting in extra work behind the scenes and I thought he was a real threat.

“It’s good for those boys because it can be difficult when you’re training well but not playing.”

Motherwell are now up to seventh place in the Premiership and well clear of the relegation issue.

Alexander added: “The boys I brought in deserved to be in. I won’t be throwing out starting places for just being here.

“It’s important for the integrity of our club and the league to be at full strength in the last two games.”
