Short, simple and shaggy! Our guide to the hottest hairstyles

- Beauty Boss Scottish Hairdresser of the Year Caroline Sanderson looks at the biggest trends of the summer so far As told to Tracey Bryce

It’s summer, which usually means time to change up your wardrobe, make-up and perfume. So why not include your hair too? After all, it’s always nice to try something new. Caroline Sanderson, voted Scottish Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards, gives us her top trends.

Short and sweet

“This summer’s hot trends are all shorter styles that work perfectly in the heat and need minimum styling,” says Sanderson, owner of Ego Hair Design in Inverness.

“Natural texture is key, so you won’t need to spend hours with the straighteners – simple light products will do the work. You can also switch up these looks with hair clips and accessories – think small plaited sections at the front for a festival feel.”

Pixie perfect

The pixie cut is back this summer with a longer vibe.

“Wear your pixie overgrown for a more androgynous look or go for what some are calling the ‘bixie‘, a pixie bob which has longer layers on the top,” explains Sanderson.“Your hairdresser can tailor this cut to suit you by accentuating certain features such as eyes and cheekbones, and colour can make a huge difference – wear it in a natural shade or go for an all over colour for dramatic impact, such as white blonde or vibrant red.”

When styling, use a rootlifting product for volume and blast dry with a hairdryer. “If it’s cut well it will just fall into place so it’s low maintenance for those who don’t like to do too much styling.”

Bob boom

The bob is another long-term trend with so many variations, from the iconic Sassoon bob to the pob (Victoria Beckham’s “Posh bob”), the lob (long bob) and now the shob (shaggy bob) bang on trend.

A much messier style with an unpolished shaggy look, it’s an easy-to-wear cut.To style the shaggy bob, if you have natural movement in your hair use a curl cream and diffuser to scrunch dry. Or diffuse, not moving it around and on a low heat.

Curly cool

If your hair is straight and you want to inject that shaggy feel, use a curling wand. Once all the hair is curled, pop your head upside down and shake it all out.

“The hottest trend is the wolf cut, as worn by Billie Eilish, which is a hybrid of a mullet and the classic shag cut,” says Sanderson.

“This features long-layered hair with attention layers framing the face, often with over-grown fringe and heavier layers at the back. Different lengths and variations can be chosen – fringes are not a one-size-fits-all style!”
