Footballer convicted of abuse leaves club

-

A footballer who was convicted of domestic abuse has left his club following widespread criticism over the signing.

We told last week how sponsors were threatening to abandon Midlothian club Whitehill Welfare for taking on Paul Tansey who was sacked by previous club Penicuik after he admitted abusing his ex-partner.

The 37-year-old from Dalkeith headbutted Lisa Robertson, 30. Tansey, the brother of former Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths, also monitored Robertson’s mobile use, contacted her repeatedly by phone and text, launched a cup of hot tea at her and damaged the front door of her Edinburgh home.

A court banned him from contacting her for five years and in May ordered him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work. Tansey had his contract with Penicuik terminated after the conviction but he was taken on by Rosewell club Whitehill weeks later.

A petition calling on the club to end its association with Tansey sprung up online, sponsors said they were considering cutting ties, and charities spoke out. Whitehill Welfare confirmed the departure of Tansey in a Twitter post on Friday evening.

The club said: “Whitehill Welfare FC can confirm that Paul Tansey has left the club. We will be making no further comment on this matter.”
