Football club backtracks on transfer pledge
The Post reported on what would become an everyday, or every season, occurrence – the foreign football transfer.
“Two crack South African footballers are at this moment packing to fly to Scotland – to play for Dundee,” it read. “They will arrive in a few weeks. They are 24-year-old Wally Warren and 18-year-old Ken Whitlock, inside-forwards for Marist Bros the Johannesburg club.
“Both players were strongly recommended to Dundee. To many, the Dundee deal will come as a big surprise. It is only three years since South Africans Gordon Frew and Ken Ziasing, regarded as permanent fixtures in the Dundee team, suddenly decided to pack up and return home.
“At that time an official of the club said: ‘Never again will we sign player from another country.’”
